Theatrical play

The creation of Caure (“To Fall”) began with a writing and memory workshop organised by Memorial Democràtic and Helena Tornero for students from the Contemporary History faculty at the UAB. Over five sessions, the students and the playwright explored the distinctions between historical narrative and fictional storytelling, focusing on how these elements intersect and diverge in the context of theatre. Together, they engaged in writing exercises that covered essential aspects of dramatic construction: time, space, event, background, character, change, and rhythm. The sessions culminated in a collective characterisation exercise inspired by a significant moment from recent history.

After the workshop, the students set off to collaborate with history students in Greece, Italy, and Poland, sharing their insights across borders. Meanwhile, the playwright began crafting a narrative for two actresses, translating these collaborative experiences and historical insights into a compelling theatrical story. The team’s discussions would continue remotely, exchanging reflections on the writing process and the translation of these ideas into the play’s staging, bridging written text and live performance.

The theatrical proposal is, beyond its artistic value, an action aimed at repairing another inexcusable oblivion: that of the women who fought – and still fight – against the totalitarian dictatorships that developed during the 20th century and, in contrast, have not been treated equally in relation to their male counterparts.

A journey through the life, facts and emotions of a woman who is many women at once; women who, like her, have suffered from the oblivion, silence or misrepresentation of their history. A stage battle with temporary jumps that will take us to the different years of the evolution of one of the darkest periods of the Spanish democratic memory: the 40s, the 60s and the end of the 70s.
